SD vs HDX vs UHD Comparison and Difference Updated

Comparison between SD vs HDX vs UHD

Lets known the basics of SD vs HDX vs UHD. Video is creating with the help of dots called pixels that comes together to make moving picture in the screen. The clarity or quality of an image depends on the pixels. With large no of pixels, high quality gains. Video files are explained in terms of their horizontal and vertical pixels.

Eg;1280 × 720p, 1920 × 1080p etc.

Pixel density is measured by the unit DPI (dots per image). The basic difference between SD, HDX and UHD formats is the number of pixels they comprised together to form a video.

Features of SD vs HDX vs UHD

SD (standard definition)

The often-called SD is a type of low-quality video format available. It is also called as DVD quality. Horizontal pixels × vertical pixels are the general term used for describing video formats. Videos other than HDX or UHD are standard definition videos and they are of low quality with lower bit rates and smaller file size. Also, they have less bandwidth.

That is video formats with standard definition of 720 × 480 pixels and has an aspect ratio of 4:3. So a 480p resolution means 480p pixels displayed vertically in a line. Hence the highest resolution provided by SD is 480p. This low quality is enough to watch videos in mobile phones. The number of vertically arranged pixels is 2160 (2k) in case of television sets.

HDX (high definition extra)

HDX stands for high definition extra and it offers a minimum resolution of 1080 pixels with best audio and video quality. This display technology is developed by Vudu. Minimum of 720 horizontal line display is provided by this. Many numbers of technologies are included here to provide this high resolution.

There are 3 technical principles behind the designing of HDX. They are intelligent redirection, adaptive compression and data de-duplication. It offers about 1080p and more than 1 GB memory. This is an enhanced version of HD (high definition) technology. HDX encodes the video twice than HD because it’s the advanced version.

HDX protocol is used by the HDX display. Also, this display has the capacity to vary bit rates related to the video scenes. Video streaming rate is provided at 24 frames per second.

UHD (ultra-high definition)

UHD or ultra-HD is another type of display resolution. This were introduced by NHK science and technology research laboratories. As the name suggest this video format is having high resolution. Ultra HD specifically referred to image resolutions with 4k and 8k video or larger than this.

videos having at least 2160 vertical pixels are referred as 4k. videos with at least 4320 vertical pixels is 8k. UHD formats are defined different for different screens. On a UHD TV the image resolution is referred as 3840 × 2160 pixels. That is total of 8,294,400 pixels. For cinema this 4k is referred as horizontal resolution of 4096 pixels with no vertical resolution.

UHD and 4k are terms used interchangeably and they are same related to consumer products. In more accurate manner UHD does not have the same resolution as in 4k. 4k is defined from the width of ultra-HD image which has nearly 4000 pixels. One thing to be noted is that 4k has two standard resolutions. One is for consumer products as mentioned earlier and other is for cinema projection (4k DCI).

What are the major differences between SD vs HDX vs UHD?

As we have seen standard definition videos are low quality videos because of the number of pixels they have incorporated. Such videos are highly suggested in slow internet connection. The reason is they will smoothly stream with very less chance of buffering.

This smooth stream is the result of their lower bite rate. High definition extra has 720 horizontal lines and they provide better quality than SD. Ultra-high definition delivers the best quality in videos and audios compared to the above two because they have more horizontal lines and resolution.

The display resolution refers to the number of pixels in terms of the width and height. If 1920 × 1080 pixels are the definition of a video display, then the resolution is based on vertical pixels. In simple, light pixels with higher numbers provides better image quality. The picture resolution delivered by UHD is perfectly sharp.

The memory size of HDX and UHD is very high compared to SD. GB or gigabytes is used to measure storage capacities. The memory power of SD is comparatively small since it is in the measure of Mbps. HDX have a memory of 1GB while UHD have 32GB. 1 GB (gigabytes) is equal to 1000 MB (megabytes). Hence 32GB is higher than the both cases.

Aspect ratio of the three SD vs HDX vs UHD video formats is different. Aspect ratio is explained with the proportional relation between width and height of the particular image or picture. In the case of high definition extra the aspect ratio is 16:10.

It means that for every 16 inches wide, the image will be 10 inches tall. Most advanced screens are with less tall and wider. When the resolution standard gets improved the current version of UHD will get outdated.
